What kinds of people go to Sojourner Church? All kinds. It has been interesting how people have found their way to our fellowship. Many of our number have been through difficult places in their lives, but what we all have in common is a need for grace, reflected from God into our lives by people who have experienced it themselves.
What do I have to do to be a member? We don't have members yet...we're a new, unchartered congregation. The tradition of our denomination is that a person joins the church by making a public confession of their faith in Jesus as the Son of God.
What does Sojourner Church believe? We believe that Jesus is the Christ, also called the Messiah, the Son of God, and we proclaim that he is Lord and Savior of the world. We don't have any other creeds or tests of fellowship. We come from a variety of backgrounds, and we don't all believe exactly the same things about doctrine or theology; we are bound together by the presence of Christ Himself, not by our beliefs about Him.
Is Sojourner Church part of a national denomination? Yes. Sojourner Church is a congregation with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada, and is under the care of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in North Carolina. Sometimes we just say "Disciples." You can find out more at www.disciples.org.
Who is the pastor and what is he like? The pastor is Dennis Lundblad, an ordained minister with more than twenty years' experience as a pastor and educator. Dennis also teaches at UNC-Asheville in the Humanities Program, and works with ministers, churches and business organizations in the area of emotional systems. He has an easy-going style, and most people find him warm and approachable.
Will I be comfortable at Sojourner Church? Seems likely. We are committed to ministering to everyone God sends our way, and we want everyone to feel welcome in our fellowship.
What should I wear? Anything you'd wear to work or to school is fine. We are a "come as you are" kind of church, and how you're dressed really doesn't matter to us.
Why don’t you have your own building? We're very new and very small; buildings are expensive! We expect we’ll have a building someday, but in the meantime we’re putting our energy into being a church.
What are worship services like? Our worship services have both structure and spontaneity. We use mostly contemporary music, with some traditional music as well. Participants often volunteer to help with parts of the service, so you'll hear a variety of voices at any given service. The service usually lasts about an hour. There is also Communion (the Lord's Supper) at every worship service, as is customary for the Disciples of Christ. You'll notice that laypeople often lead the service; we believe that every Christian is eligible to preside over the Communion experience.
How can I participate? There are plenty of things you can do to participate in the life of the church. You can come early and help arrange the tables and chairs; you can join the worship band if you like to sing or play an instrument; you can lead part of the worship service, such as the welcome, the call to worship, or the communion service; you can attend the Wednesday Evening Pot-Luck Supper & Bible Study; and you can participate by praying for the congregation and by giving to the work of the church.
Do you have programs for children and youth? Not yet, though we are happy to accommodate children as best we can. We are simply too new and perhaps too small to have an organized youth or children's ministry.
